Professional Biography

Hi! I'm Lexie DeAnda. I have been a music educator for ten years and teaching is my passion. I hold a BFA in Music Performance & Voice with certification in Music Education EC-12.

The music classroom is a place for exploring, creating and having fun. While voice is the primary instrument and focus at the elementary level, our students also have opportunities to learn and perform on a variety of Orff instruments including xylophone, ukulele, drums and more. Our students sing and play instruments as an ensemble, improving fluency in both language and reading. They are involved in the creative process which includes selecting repertoire, collaborating on ideas for stage productions, and offering peer feedback which provides them with value, meaning, and purpose. They are reminded that greatness is never achieved alone and that as lifelong learners, there is always room for improvement.

On campus I serve as the music ensemble director, campus team lead and UIL music memory coach. My students and I have been awarded multiple grants for cross-curricular programs that have increased parent and family engagement and raised awareness for the broader cause of fine arts education.  I was awarded campus Teacher of the Year in 2016 and District Elementary Teacher of the Year in 2023.

My proudest moment as a teacher arose from being given the opportunity to compose an anthem for the great Hippo Nation. Una canción para todos! Teaching at a school with over twenty home languages, I hoped its lyrics would celebrate the rich cultures that our city embodies and highlight the values we are known for: innovation, leadership, diversity and excellence in academics, character and community. This anthem, Hippo Strong, is now being sung by students throughout the district. It is the designated song for World Hippo Day and it was featured in the documentary film, Hippo on the Loose: The Legend of Hutto, Texas. We aspire to leave a legacy by singing it with pride at every school event and encouraging all to honor its message, “Each of us are different but we all belong… to the Hippo Nation, Hippo Strong.”
